A painting by the Dutch painter Pieter de Grebber depicts a man reading. The work was bought and brought to Polish by the Warsaw art dealer Abe Gutnajer in 1917 at an auction in Berlin. The Germans looted the painting on July 21, 1942, during a murder planned for Abe Gutnajer.
A portrait of a man reading appeared at Christie's in London in March 2006. Through the Polish embassy, the auction was suspended. After finding the heirs of the Gutnajer family, talks were held with the anonymous owner of the work. The painting was re-sold on April 25, 2008. The profits from the sale were shared by the anonymous owner of the work and the Gutnajer family. The painting did not return to Polish.
