1656 - Painting - 75cm x 1.1m

Portrait of Emanuel De Geer, 1624-1692, brother of Louis de Geer, Jr., is a 1656 painting by Bartholomeus van der Helst.

The artwork, housed in the Nationalmuseum, depicts a half-length portrait of Emanuel De Geer. He is shown from the waist up, his body slightly turned to the viewer's left, while his gaze is directed slightly to the viewer's right.

De Geer is a man with long, dark brown hair that falls to his shoulders. He has a fair complexion and is wearing a light brown or tan coat with elaborate gold embroidery on the shoulders and sleeves. Underneath, he wears a white cravat or collar. His sleeves are puffed at the wrists, revealing white cuffs. A dark sash or stole is draped across his body, partially obscuring his left arm. A portion of a dark object, possibly a cloak or part of a uniform, is visible on his left side. His right hand is extended towards the viewer. The background is a muted landscape with cloudy skies. The painting measures 0.75 meters in width and 1.1 meters in height.
