Virgin and Child Surrounded by Angels

Madonna surrounded by seraphim and cherubim, together with Etienne Chevalier and Saint Stephen, forms the famous Melundiptiek. The strikingly modern-looking work was made in oil on panel by Jean Fouquet (Tours 1420 - Tours 1471) ca. 1454-56. The panel was commissioned by Etienne Chevalier, purchased by knight Florent van Ertborn and bequeathed to the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp in 1841.
