The happy island

"The Happy Island," painted between 1865 and 1868, invites us to step into a tranquil landscape. This captivating work by Gustave Courbet, housed right here at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, measures an impressive 1.425 meters wide by 1.88 meters tall. Notice how Courbet masterfully uses light and shadow, leading our eyes through the canopy of trees. The flowing water, perhaps a river, mirrors the sky and surrounding nature, enhancing the sense of peace. On the right, a figure almost camouflaged by the tree trunk seems to be carving into it, perhaps leaving their mark on this idyllic setting. A second, smaller figure can just be made out behind them, adding an element of mystery. In the distance, a tower-like structure peeks through the trees and atmospheric haze, hinting at a world beyond this peaceful haven.
