Brulement de l'effigie du juda : le Samedi Saint

1839 - Print - 23.3cm x 32cm

Hi everyone! My name is Isabella, and I'm so excited to show you a really cool picture today! It's called Burning of the effigy of Judas: Holy Saturday. It's from a long, long time ago – 1839! Can anyone guess how old that is? (Pause for answers). Wow, that's a very long time ago! This picture was made by an artist named Jean-Baptiste Debret. He lived in Brazil. nn This picture is like a story in two parts. See how it's divided? Let's look at the top part first. What do you see happening there? (Pause for answers). That's right! There's a big crowd of people. They're all different, some look like they have darker skin. They're celebrating a special day called Holy Saturday. And look! They're lifting someone up high. That's probably Judas, a character from a very famous story. Do you know the story of Judas? (Pause for answers). It's a bit sad, but this picture shows how people celebrated even though it was a serious story. See the church in the background? That shows us this is a religious celebration. nn Now let's look at the bottom part. What's different here? (Pause for answers). Yes! It's darker and a little spooky. There are some scary-looking figures hanging from trees. They look a bit like monsters, don't they? These are also part of the celebration, but they show a different side of the story – a bit mysterious and maybe a little scary. The artist used lots of shadows and light to make the picture really interesting. nn The artist, Debret, was really good at showing people's faces and how they felt. He didn't use lots of colors, just black, white, and gray. But that makes the story even more powerful, doesn't it? It's like a movie, but with just black, white, and gray! This picture tells us a lot about how people lived and celebrated in Brazil a long, long time ago. It's like a time machine! nn What do you think is the most interesting part of this picture? (Pause for answers). I'm glad you all had a chance to see this amazing picture! Remember, art can tell us stories from the past and help us understand different cultures. Now, let's go see some more amazing art! nn
