The panel with St. Michael the Archangel and stories of his legend is attributed to the painter Coppo di Marcovaldo and can be dated to the years from about 1250 to 1260.
It is one of the prominent works of the permanent collection of the Museum of San Casciano di San Casciano Val di Pesa, in the province of Florence, as well as one of the milestones of Florentine painting of the thirteenth century before the advent of Cimabue.
