Portrait of the Family of the 1st Viscount of Santarém

Portrait of the Family of the 1st Viscount of Santarém

1816 - Painting - 1.77m x 1.36m

The Family Portrait of the 1st Viscount of Santarém is an oil painting on canvas by the painter Portuguese Domingos Sequeira and which is currently part of the collection of the National Museum of Ancient Art of Lisbon.

The painting therefore represents the 1st Viscount of Santarém, João Diogo de Barros Leitão Carvalhosa, accompanied by his second wife, five children of this marriage and his younger brother, D. António Roberto, Archbishop of Adrianópolis. On the hanging board is represented his firstborn son.

Given the date of the title of Viscount of Santarém by The Prince Regent D. João in 1811, the insertion of a statue of D. João VI on the table, which had been acclaimed king in 1816, along with the verification of the ages of the characters, led Maria Alice Beaumont to suggest the date of 1816 for the realization of the painting.
