Lamentation of Christ

Lamentation of Christ is a painting created by Quentin Matsys between 1500 and 1525. It is currently in museum storage. The painting measures 0.58 meters in width and 0.74 meters in height.

The artwork depicts the Lamentation of Christ. The central figure is the deceased Christ, lying on a white cloth. His body is pale, and wounds are visible. A woman, presumably Mary, the mother of Jesus, is shown in a blue robe and white head covering, her hands clasped to her chest, her face expressing sorrow. Another figure, likely St. John, is positioned behind and to the left of Christ, wearing a red robe, also appearing grief-stricken. The background shows a dark, rocky landscape with three crosses visible in the distance, suggesting the crucifixion site. The overall tone of the painting is somber and mournful.
