Marine

Marine

1866 - Painting - 65.7cm x 43.2cm

Just like the Mediterranean coasts, Courbet encountered the landscapes of Normandy from 1841. When he returned to Deauville and Trouville in the 1860s, Courbet painted a series of Marines in which he testified to his fascination for the sea and for its waves.

In this Marine, Courbet animates the sky, the water and the earth, which he comes to confront and reconcile thanks to his palette of colors. He does not hesitate to represent atmospheric elements, which accentuate the tumult of the English Channel, causing the waves to roll until they arrive on the beach. The seas and skies of Normandy provide him with new subjects, and allow him to translate the form of a wild and natural power, through matter.
